First Class, all the way, at least at Bumrungrad, Thailand!

One of the first names that comes up when people consider a location in Asia for medical treatment is the JCI accredited hospital Bumrungrad in Thailand.

Perhaps its on its way to creating a whole new niche in hospital cuisine as well. This year, 12 of the country’s finest chefs, together with the hospital’s nutritionists and food service partner Sodexo, will create healthy menus representing “The Seven Amazing Wonders of Thailand.”

“We introduced Great Chefs in 2000 to demonstrate that hospital food doesn’t have to be boring,” says Mr. Mack Banner, Bumrungrad’s CEO. “This year, we wanted to connect these expert chefs to what’s special about Thailand–for example, great beaches and delicious seafood. The TAT campaign offers a natural tie-in.”

The participating hotels include: Swissotel Le Concorde Bangkok, Pan Pacific Bangkok, Sofitel Centara Grand Bangkok, Banyan Tree Bangkok, JW Marriott Bangkok, Pathumwan Princess, Amari Boulevard, Bangkok Marriott Resort & Spa, Conrad Bangkok, Dusit Thani Bangkok, InterContinental Bangkok, and Courtyard By Marriott Bangkok.

Under the Great Chef program, top hotel chefs work with Sodexo, Bumrungrad’s food service partner, to design 12 special menus, each featured for one month of the year. These menus are available at no extra charge, giving patients the opportunity to sample creative dishes from Thailand’s culinary experts. The hospital serves over 1,000 Great Chef meals each month.

Named one of the world’s top 10 medical destinations by Newsweek magazine, Bumrungrad won the Award of Excellence in the category of Health Tourism at the 7th Thailand Tourism Awards last September.

Neo Pachisia,

D.Psych.Astrol; D.F.Astrol.S, Advanced EFT Practitioner, Shamanic Healer

“Right now”, says Neo, “the ‘global recession’ is a good donkey to hang all our miseries on. But if you think about your money issues, did they really start last year? How about the year before? Tell the truth, could you have had a poor relationship with money for as long as you remember? “

“The last year may have brought our money issues to the surface—which in my opinion, is a good thing! Now we can deal with it once for all and get it out of the way.”

Who is Neo Pachisia and what can she do for you?

The word ‘enlightened’ is overused, so I’ll say it in other words. In my own experience, I would say that Neo is a deeply thoughtful soul, mysteriously in touch with universal one-ness, and a compassionate friend.

Take a look at what Tiziana Blancato, Wealth Management, Morgan Stanley, London, says about her: “Neo is an intelligent and profound woman with whom I have shared many personal thoughts. She has great energy and psychological understanding, and her mind sees far into the soul. This is no self improvement, but a new kind of therapy which considers your past tendencies, your future possibilities and your present state of mind, your present attitude towards life. Neo is a soul investigator and she can tap right into the obscure zones of your life, bringing them back to the light, in a way that does not simply imply confrontation and understanding of the issues, but more importantly how to use negative experiences to move beyond them, and realize the existence of new alternatives in life. Neo is also a healer, a guide with the ability to combine many disciplines like EFT, astrology, psychology and mythology….”

Neo’s EFT WORKSHOP on THRIVING!

We create our own Reality through our Beliefs, Check out your beliefs in this little quiz. Which one of the following Beliefs do you hold?

I hate rich people.

All rich people became rich by being corrupt, greedy, exploitative..

I feel guilty about charging a fee.

You have to pay a price (say in health etc)for being rich.

I feel sad that I have more money than my sister.

I resent having to work for money.

I hate my boss but I need the job.

I feel ashamed that I cannot support my family as well as I want to.

I may have to move to smaller house.

Only rich people make money and more money

It’s not in my destiny

How will I last the year?

If I have wealth I’ll be envied and I’d rather be liked

I don’t deserve it

There is no hope…..

Or something similar to these beliefs.

If you agree with one or more of the above statements, you need to attend this workshop.

And, if you are in New Delhi, you’re in luck. Neo’s Workshop on Thriving is being made available at an introductory price of just Rs. 595, or US$ 12.

If you’re even thinking not being there, listen to what a few other people have to say about her extraordinary work.

“Neo…has guided me through one of the most difficult periods in my life and allowed me to gain perspective and insight into my psychological journey. She has enriched my psyche and enabled me to take control of issues in my life which were spiralling out of control.” Lisa Lesniak-Smith, London.

“I don’t really go for astrology, but Neo’s reading—not just of my charts but of myself as a human being—stunned me.” R. Srinivasan, Resident Editor, Indian Express, India.

“Those of you that would not find Neo of great help are those that do not want to be helped, it really is that simple.” Ray Mia, Managing Director, Mainframe Television and Business Development, Director PTE, the broadcasting arm of N & S Network, London

And, finally, a word from Gary Craig, Creator of EFT: “Fortunately, the basics of EFT are quite simple…so simple, in fact, that it can be used effectively for those having only minimal educations. Neo Pachisia from the UK took EFT to India and conducted a workshop entirely in the HINDI language. As you will see, quality results ensued and it was subsequently used in a carpet factory for mostly semi-literate people.”

Coming?

Due to unforeseen circumstances, the program that was scheduled for Saturday April 4, 2009 has been canceled. Please check with Neo regarding her new schedule.

Mala Barua is ecstatic about her experience with Dance Therapy at the Quiet Spa, Auroville, Pondicherry.

“Its been one of the most effective and interesting healing modules that I have come across recently, and in my enthusiasm to share this with all of you I persuaded the gorgeous Ashaman Gray to give us some of his precious time to create a small and intimate retreat for Mystic-Asia”, says Mala.

Mala conducts small retreats in a sacred space where participants get a taste of being in touch with themselves. Her teachers are carefully selected so that the teachings are substantially based on ancient wisdom and yet modified for a modern audience. Retreats are organized in premium spas and resorts, which are designed to be conducive to meditative pursuits.

She is involved in spa consultancy work with emphasis on healing centers. She is also an artist and has helped people with Yoga, Tai Chi and Meditation.

Healing Dance is a derivation of Watsu (Water Shiatsu) that requires a special pool, of which there are only two in India. This opportunity is also special because, of the very few teachers in the world, who are certified instructors of WABA (Worldwide Aquatic Bodywork Association), not many live and work in India. Ashaman, himself, lives in Hawaii.

Quiet Spa, Auroville, Pondicherry

Quiet, is a center for alternate therapies and a healing space in the tradition of spas as they are meant to be. Set by the beach, there are acres of land with lush foliage and villas connected through cobbled pathways. Come and share some quiet time with us doing yoga in the morning (optional), healing in the water, lying on the hammocks and detoxifying with their amazingly delicious vegan feast.

'Pay it Forward' Approach Creates Breakthrough Chain of Ten Kidney Transplants

Did you know that the average patient with end stage renal disease will live 10 years longer if they receive a kidney transplant versus staying on dialysis?

Unfortunately, there are not enough kidneys to help everyone in need receive a kidney transplant. Over 73,000 people are on the kidney transplant waiting list in America. Sadly, about 12 of these patients die every day while awaiting a kidney transplant, or one person every two hours.

To complicate matters, the autoimmune system prevents everyone from donating to their loved ones. It is estimated that one third of all willing kidney donors will have an incompatible blood type with their intended recipient.

‘Pay it Forward’ Approach Creates Breakthrough Chain of Ten Kidney Transplants

‘Pay it Forward’ is a compassionate approach to donating kidneys that was developed by Dr. Michael A. Rees, professor of urology at The University of Toledo Medical Center and founder and medical director of the Alliance for Paired Donation. This ground breaking approach to increasing the quantity and quality of kidney transplants across the US is detailed in the March 12, 2009 edition of the New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM). The article highlights the world’s longest chain of kidney transplants made possible by maximizing the good that can come from an altruistic, or Good Samaritan, kidney donor. By passing the altruism of the first donor in the chain onto all subsequent donors, incompatible pairs no longer have to pay back the gift given to them. Instead, the barriers between donors and recipients are overcome through a chain of non simultaneous transplants in which participants “pay it forward” to others in need.

(More at National Kidney Foundation)

For an animation that makes the Non Extended Altruistic Donor Chain clearer, go here.

While it may seem disconnected and unscientific at first sight, the key to the breakthrough is simple, human compassion.

If you think about it, the only reason that the kidney transplants happened was compassion, unreasonable kindness, or altruism.

Indeed, the scientific community is taking a deep interest in the role of compassion in healing.

95 Percent of patients say compassion aids healing process, according to a Swedish Covenant Hospital Poll of 300 patients.

Meanwhile, The Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, Emory School of Medicine found that individuals who engage in compassion meditation may benefit by reductions in inflammatory and behavioral responses to psychological stress.

The compassion meditation program that was studied was based on a thousand-year-old Tibetan Buddhist mind-training practice called “lojong” in Tibetan.

“While much attention has been paid to meditation practices that emphasize calming the mind, improving focused attention or developing mindfulness, less is known about meditation practices designed to specifically foster compassion,” says Geshe Lobsang Tenzin Negi, PhD, who designed and taught the meditation program used in the study.

The study has been published online at www.sciencedirect.com and in the medical journal Psychoneuroendocrinology.

If you’re interested in Compassion Meditation, a meditation that goes beyond the self and impacts loved ones, and whole communities, there are several excellent training programs available in different parts of India.

Last month, Indian tennis ace Sania Mirza skipped the Fed Cup in Perth, Australia. Diagnosed with a three-and-a-half centimeter tear in Melbourne, she was disappointed, but not in despair. She made straight for her the ‘miracle’ doctor, Delhi-based Jatin Chaudhry. Back in August 2008, a wrist injury had sent the star performer into a down spin, and forced her to stay away from the tennis courts for half a season, it was Chaudhry who set her back on track.

Mirza observed, at the time, “It was scary. It was career threatening. I was almost going through depression. I think the post-injury period is more difficult to cope with and I am happy to be back. But I never doubted that I cannot make a comeback .”

Treated once again by Chaudhry in February, a day before the Davis Cup, Mirza was back on court and said, “It’s like magic isn’t it?
Regarding her earlier wrist injury that kept her out of play for most of 2008, treated with Spiral Therapy she says, “There’s been no pain, and I haven’t even had to ice it once!“.

There are just a handful of doctors practicing Spiral therapy, or Ingham’s Method as it is also known. Being a practioner requires a PHD and many years of medical study. Dr. Jatin Chaudhry is one of the few, and he has worked hard at establishing and popularizing this Korean therapy which is basically regeneration of cells, where the pulse of the patient is first found and then various points identified which are then in turn stimulated using needles, current and laser treatments apart from various other painless mechanisms. This treatment is specially popular in Italy. Chaudhry says, “I guess I simply got lucky to have manged it all this early in life. Each session takes about two – three hours and a couple of weeks at least but that depends upon the nature of the ailment.” Sure there are limitations and we can only do so much, but if we can reduce pain levels and enhance the quality of life, then that itself is a high. May I stress again that one needs to be patient…it takes time to heal and for us that time period is crucial.“

Dr. Chaudhry treats patients suffering from diseases like cancer, AIDS, cerebral palsy, visual impairment, spinal disorders apart from diabetes, kidney ailments. With a team comprising of just four young enthusiasts, together they treat about 80 patients a day in his New Delhi clinic.

Sania Mirza, Yuvraj Singh, Sachin Tendulkar are just a few of the sports stars who have been treated by and recommend Dr. Chaudhary’s treatments.

No two ways about it – Bad Things Happen to Good People. During the current recession, millions have lost jobs. And they don’t know what to do next. Companies and governments are helping these people cope, and to relocate or find new jobs.

But what happens to the people who are left behind?

You could think it would be easy for someone who still has a job to carry on, but it isn’t. People feel guilty about being able to earn a paycheck, while former colleagues are unemployed.

Says Karen, a star software programmer with a well known company – ‘my sister was laid off last week. She worked in another town and in another company. I feel so bad for her, I can’t pay attention to work anymore. I’m angry with the people who sacked her so unceremoniously and I feel guilty even about having a cell phone while she can’t afford one now.’

They become defensive, irritable, and even hostile to life, other colleagues, and the company that they work for. This is natural and completely human – but it isn’t productive in the workplace. A lot of time gets spent in worrying, and not enough time is spent on the tasks a hand.

This is probably the last thing that a company needs at a time when needs to be at its competitive best and produce the results that will actually re-create an environment in which they can be productive, earn money, and start hiring again.

Some companies have started programs that address this guilt with counseling. A medical tourism company, Optimum Cure & Care has even devised a complete corporate package that includes counseling, screenings to measure the impact of stress, Yoga and meditation to help companies get back on the productivity track.

Forbes’ survey of sensibly priced care around the globe.

If you’re new to the idea of traveling abroad for medical treatment, you’re in good company.

Joseph Woodman, exhaustive researcher into the modern phenomenon of medical travel, and author of Patients Beyond Borders, Everybody’s Guide to Affordable, World-Class Medical Care Abroad, recounts his first encounter with the phenomenon.

Some years ago, he says, “My father announced quite suddenly that he was heading to Mexico to get his teeth restored.” He couldn’t afford the American price tag, which was more than $20,000. Woodman went along for the ride.

Like many Americans, Woodman expected to find untrained doctors, rusty instruments and dirty clinics waiting south of the border. “I guess I was just as biased as the next person,” he says. He found exactly the opposite. “In many places, the quality of care was excellent and my father saved $13,000, even after taking into account the cost of the trip, accommodation and bringing his wife along as a companion.”

Which were the hottest medical travel destinations in 2008?

Just in case you mised this roundup of 2008′s best medical tourism destinations from Forbes, here are the highlights and a link to their site

Singapore

The island-state of Singapore in Southeast Asia has an impressive 11 JCI-accredited hospitals, which means there are more than enough well-trained doctors and staff to handle the relatively small population of 4.5 million. Hence, this tiny island welcomes more than 200,000 sick people each year.

Mexico
Mexico specialize in elective procedures that aren’t covered by U.S. health plans: cosmetic and weight-loss surgery, dentistry, breast augmentation. Americans can save between 50 and 75 percent on dental procedures. Because of the massive U.S. population centers close to the border like Los Angeles, Tucson, San Diego and Phoenix, the medical economy has grown out of international visitation.

Costa Rica
Around 14 percent of Costa Rica’s international tourism is medical in nature. Many come for the usual array of cosmetic and dental procedures. Costa Rica stands out for having well-equipped, luxurious recovery retreats.

Hungary
Before the Velvet Revolution, medical care in the country then called Czechoslovakia was, at best, erratic. But today, the capital, Prague, is on the rise as a destination for medical tourists. The Czech Republic is also building its reputation for tattoo removal and alleviating temporomandibular disorders, which may affect one in eight Americans.

Malaysia
Malaysia’s infrastructure is excellent and English is widely spoken. Prices are 30 to 50 percent lower than those in neighboring Singapore.

South Africa
South Africa may seem like a long way to go for a doctor, but for many patients that’s precisely the point. For those seeking cosmetic or addiction treatments without the prying eyes of the paparazzi, a “month-long safari” is just the ticket. Prices aren’t the lowest in the world—breast augmentation and liposuction both start at more than $4500—but the extra expense brings with it privacy. And many medical travel agents do, in fact, include safaris in their packages.

India
Medical tourism was practically invented in India, says Josef Woodman, President of the Healthy Travel Media Company and author of Patients Beyond Borders. “It started about 10 years ago when the queues in Britain for osteo and cardio work were so long that people were literally dying before they could get to the operating table.” Today, India attracts more than 150,000 international patients annually. This high patient volume has its advantages, says Woodman. American surgeons may simply not have performed as many operations, and they are cautious about discussing success rates. But ask an Indian doctor, and it’s “550 surgeries and a 95 percent success rate.” Of course how “success” is measured is also a subject that needs to be researched.

Thailand
For many years Thailand was known as the place to arrive “he” and depart “she.” When the Asian economies collapsed 10 years ago, the Thai medical community took advantage of their cheap currency and advanced medical infrastructure to attract international visitors for other procedures, most notably neurology, ophthalmology, cardiovascular and orthopedics.

Brazil
The idea of a butt-lift may elicit smirks, but Brazil takes its cosmetic medical procedures seriously. The secret is that interns must complete two years of general surgery internship, then another three years of plastic surgery internship, before they’re certified. In the States, cosmetic surgeons are required to have just 36 months of general surgery residence.

All the countries featured here have great wellness practitioners for pre and post treatment – and exotic sights and of course, shopping therapy!

Casinos are doing it. In Colorado, Mexico, and Uttarkhand, hospitals are doing it. Now, a luxury train in South India is doing it, too!

The Golden Chariot train offers authentic Ayurvedic treatment, as it takes a leisurely 7 day sweep through history-laden South India.

As Susie Ellis, President of the global spa resource SpaFinder, Inc., says in the “Top 10 Spa Trends To Watch In 2009” report “…there’s never been more breeding going on in the spa Petri dish.“

Ms. Ellis, the ultimate spa insider, notes: “In a few short years I’ve watched spas go from a narrow focus on pampering to become a vastly expanded category where dozens of wellness solutions are explored. They’ve become, in essence, our alternative ‘laboratories’ for testing new health and wellness approaches–from fitness, nutrition, acupuncture and yoga–or more recently, sleep and fertility solutions.”

Energy Medicine, Casinos & Spas, blurring lines between hospitals and spas, In-Transit Spa-Going on trains, boats and planes are just some of the things that Wellness seekers can look forward to in 2009, and this train is just one of the many unique Wellness journeys available.

Ancient Wisdom Touches Parts of Your Life That Modern Medicine Cannot Reach

Ayurvedic Massage is just the tip of an ancient body of wisdom, estimated to be anywhere between 3,000 and 5,000 years old. This body of wisdom is contained in the Vedas, probably the world’s oldest oral and written collection of works of science and art. These have been communicated from generation to generation, father to son, Master to acolyte. It has been the sacred duty of the recipient of the knowledge to commit these scriptures perfectly to memory. Tampering with the sacred scriptures in any way, even human forgetfulness is a sacrilege that carries dire consequences to this day. Even so, a fraction of the wisdom has been irrevocably lost. For the most part, this body of of wisdom is practised in its pristine form in India, especially Ayurveda in Kerala, the birthplace of this amazing Science of Wellness and Art of Living.

Ayurveda in Perspective

Just to put Ayurveda in perspective, here is a partial list of the other works in this powerful collection that embraces science, philosophy, the meaning of life, community, art and music, astronomy, medicine, architecture, poetry, the nature of the man – woman relationship, and much more.

Detail from Khajuraho Temple

A List of the Vedic texts

Yajur Veda – Knowledge of Liturgy, 3,988 verses
Sama Veda – Knowledge of Classical Music, 1,549 verses
Ayur Veda – Knowledge of Medicine, over 100,000 verses

Sulba Sutra – Knowledge of Mathematics
Yoga Sutra – Knowledge of Meditation
Kama Sutra – Knowledge of Love and Sex

Insights into Ayurveda and The Vedas

It would take, perhaps a lifetime to grasp what Ayurveda has to offer.

Much better to listen in to what people exprienced in their exploration of these scintillating texts.

Henry David Thoreau
American Phiilosopher
(1817-1862)
“…Whenever I have read any part of the Vedas, I have felt that some unearthly and unknown light illuminated me. In the great teaching of the Vedas, there is no touch of the sectarianism.”

J. Robert Oppenheimer
American nuclear physicist
(1904-1967)
“Access to the Vedas is the greatest privilege this century may claim over all previous centuries. “

Apollonius Tyaneus
Greek Thinker and Traveller
1st Century AD
“In India I found a race of mortals living upon the Earth, but not adhering to it. Inhabiting cities, but not being fixed to them, possessing everything but possessed by nothing.”

George Bernard Shaw
Irish dramatist, literary critic, socialist spokesman
(1856-1950)
“The Indian way of life provides the vision of the natural, real way of life. We veil ourselves with unnatural masks.”
